Bench note · why the spring faces the oil
The lip with the garter spring faces the oil or grease you keep in. The second, dust lip faces out. Fitted backwards it leaks from the first turn.
Bench note · why a lead-in on the shaft
Push it on over a chamfer, a sleeve or tape over keyways and threads: a sharp edge rolls or cuts the lip. Press the seal in square with a driver on the outer case, not on the lip.
