What Benchsmith does
A web app for machinists and fitters: measure it, identify it, make it. Everything below works in the browser. Nothing to install.
Exports
- Drawing PDF: an A3 sheet with dimensioned views (first or third angle), a section where the part has a bore, detail views, an isometric view, a title block with ISO 2768-m, and a second sheet with the process, operation by operation. Prints on A3, on A4 or across two A4 sheets.
- DXF: 1:1 in mm, for laser, plasma, waterjet or CAM.
- 1:1 template: the outline at full size with a 100 mm check line, for marking out or test-fitting.
- STL: a 3D model for 3D printing.
- OBJ: a 3D model for other 3D programs.
- STEP: the exact solid (true cylinders, cones and spheres) for CAD and CAM.
- Project zip: every drawing in a project, PDF and DXF, in one file.
Find a part from what you measured
- Bearings: by number (decoded, with sealed and shielded versions and brand equivalents) or by bore × OD × width. Deep groove ball, Angular contact ball, Self-aligning ball, Double row ball, Cylindrical roller, Tapered roller, Needle roller, Ball thrust bearing, Cylindrical roller thrust and Spherical roller thrust; also thin-section, miniature and imperial R series.
- Threads: from the outside or inside Ø you measured: ISO metric coarse, ISO metric fine, UNC, UNF, BSP parallel (G), BSPT taper (R / Rc), NPT, BSW, Trapezoidal (Tr) and Acme.
- Circlips: DIN 471 (shaft) and DIN 472 (bore), with groove sizes.
- Oil seals: DIN 3760 sizes, shaft × bore × width.
- O-rings: AS568 and metric, with gland sizes for a shaft, a bore or a face seal.
- Order list: collect what you found and send it by WhatsApp, copy it or save it as a PDF.
Calculators
- PCD: hole positions, chord and coordinates for any number of holes.
- Dividing head: turns and holes per division.
Make a part
From stock
Start from round bar or square / flat bar and add operations in order. Each one lands on the process sheet.
- Drilling: hole and pcd. Tapped holes take the tap drill from the thread table: M coarse, M fine, UNC, UNF, BSP G, BSPT Rc, NPT and BSW.
- Turning: face, turn, step, taper, thread, groove, chamfer, bore, centre, ball and cone / seat.
- Milling: flat, keyway, bore key, hex or square, slot, pocket, step, skim, radius groove, round, chamfer, splines, internal splines and tab.
- Gears: teeth and internal teeth (spur and helical).
Other ways to make a part
- Plate: flanges, washers, clutch plates and gaskets from an outside shape, an inside shape and a bolt circle.
- Sketch: draw with a finger; lines, arcs and circles snap; layers stack into a 3D part.
- Turned: shafts, pins and bushes as steps, with threads, keyways, flats, cross holes, grooves, undercuts, centre holes and ISO 286 fits.
- Photo: photograph a part, scale it from two measurements or a known rectangle, trace it, and get a plate, a cover or a gasket.
Projects
Group parts by job, machine or customer. A project's customer name and job number print on every drawing in it.
