Bench note · why the groove, not the clip
The clip is named by the shaft it fits (Ø8), but you cut the groove: Ø7.6, 0.9 wide, 0.2 deep. Square corners at the bottom so the clip sits flat against the side.
Bench note · why outside pliers
A shaft clip (DIN 471) is opened to go on: outside pliers. Open it only as far as it takes to pass the shaft; stretched too far it stays loose in the groove.

Clip gone and only the groove left? Measure the shaft, or the bottom of the old groove, and type it into Benchsmith → Find → Circlip.
